Scania Trucks heritage and time-tested solutions

Success is not a matter of chance. This is the result of ups and downs, risks and gains. Behind every success story there is a valuable heritage worth commemorating.

How Scania was born

Recently, the company has been especially energetic, celebrating 125 years of work in the trucking industry. The story begins in relation to a privately owned wagon construction company, established in 1891 in Södertälje (30 km southwest of Stockholm) under the name VABIS. Aktiebolaget (Vagnfabriks I Södertälje). It specialized in the manufacture of railroad cars, cars, and trucks. Meanwhile, the English bicycle manufacturer Humber & Co opened a subsidiary in Malmö (southern Sweden). Four years later, the business of this company was taken over by a newly formed company, known as Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Scania. The brand title ‘Scania’ was taken from the old Latin name for the southernmost province of Sweden. And the trademark, the griffin, was taken from the region’s coat of arms. As we can see, the creators of the company took care of their heritage from the beginning.

Soon, the newly founded Scania decided to expand its manufacturing operations and began to produce rubber machines, vacuum cleaning units, precision sprockets, but most importantly – trucks and cars. The turning point for the company occurred in 1911 when it merged with VABIS. The new company became known as AB Scania-Vabis.

When it comes to vehicle production, the quality of the manufactured engines is one of the main factors, crucial for business success. Scania has a wealth of experience in this field. From the brand’s first 24hp 4-cylinder power unit to the current benchmark, the 16-liter 8-cylinder V8, Scania industrial engines have played an important role in powering boats, trucks and buses. around the world.

How Scania was in charge of time

Heredity is what we have when time passes. As a general rule, those who value time and use it thoroughly, take advantage of the subsequent results. But Scania even exceeded these limits. Enthusiasts at the company dared to challenge time itself and triumphed.

To demonstrate the unique abilities of the latest generation of trucks, Scania decided to put together a huge truck-powered clock. Thus, the creators wanted to emphasize their commitment to the value of time in long-distance transport, and the corresponding promise, given to customers.

The demonstration took place in a large deserted airfield under 40 degrees of heat. Approximately 250 project participants created a fully functional watch built from 14 large Scania platforms and tracked them every hour, every minute and every second throughout the day. The challenge was made possible by 90 highly experienced and specially trained drivers (who had to change their shifts on the fly to ensure the unstoppable pace of the trucks, operating like clockwise) and Scania Fleet Care operators (who observed and supervised the nearby tower scene).

So this is the case, when the word ‘time tested’ is not just a clever word but an actual fact of the matter.

Why Scania has returned to the top

The main heroes of the successful experiment over time, Scania’s next-generation S-series trucks, continued the tradition (established by previous generations of the brand’s trucks) of winning ‘International Truck of the Year’ awards. This year’s title became the fifth in Scania’s gold collection, following victories for the Scania R-series in 2010, the Scania R-series in 2005, the Scania 4-series in 1996, and the 3-series. from Scania in 1989.

Without a doubt, this triumph of the launched S series is the result of more than a century of hard work in the industry. These trucks were designed with regard to long-distance targeting, where cost-effectiveness is the key. In fact, to track the top trucking solutions, it is clear that the designers’ primary concern was to increase the bet on long-distance driver comfort. That’s why the cabin offers luxurious and spacious living, provided by a flat floor, exceptionally convenient storage facilities, and an extended panoramic view from the driver’s position. Other advancements were developed to optimize operating economics. Thanks to modernized injectors and combustion chambers, as well as the new rear axle ratio, Scania’s latest engines are 3% more efficient in relation to engine speed and fuel consumption.

However, it goes without saying that today’s automotive industry is not just about building state-of-the-art vehicles, it is also about delivering high-quality service solutions. As for Scania, it provides comprehensive advice relevant to financing and flexible maintenance planning.

Surely, when buying a heavy truck, there are several options. Depending on the peculiarities of the operation, one can benefit from buying a second-hand vehicle. In this sense, the precise quality control at both manufacturing and service level, guaranteed by the Swedish brand, allows used Scania trucks to remain well on the market.

Another interesting fact about Scania AB, which has a favorable effect on the stable development of the company and its legacy, is a very promising partnership with Nobel Media. Under the agreement, Scania employees have access to the Nobel Museum during specified periods, as well as the possibility to participate in all activities supported by the Nobel International Partnership.

Furthermore, research into the brand’s projects shows that Scania AB is particularly concerned with protecting the environment. The manufacturer is building a network of electrified roads to drive Scania trolley-type trucks, which are powered by pantograph manifolds. Another example includes the company’s investment in the construction of wind turbines in one of the factory’s areas to use renewable energy for its industrial activities. This forward thinking trucking company is used to file hundreds of patent applications on new inventions each year. Therefore, it is not surprising that it is listed as one of the most innovative companies in Sweden.
